Dota 2 Predictions – The Kiev Major 2017 Main Event
The Group Stage is all done, and we have a Dota 2 bracket to work with throughout the Main Event. It’s time to make a prediction or two. Let’s get straight to it.
Invictus Gaming (3) vs. mousesports (14)
Invictus Gaming is the third seed of the Kiev Main Event, and arguably the strongest team in the world given their recent results and consistency. iG was 4-0 on games before losing 0-2 to Secret; I anticipate a finals rematch between these two sides. That’s assuming Virtus.pro is overwhelmed in the semi-finals.
The winners of the Boston Major (Ad Finem, signed to mousesports) met Invictus Gaming in Round 1 of the Group Stage. Fan prediction favored iG, but mouseports was expected to compete. The result was a 2-0 sweep for iG. Newbee was also tough for mousesports to overcome, falling two games to one in Round 2. I wouldn’t be surprised if iG sweeps mouz, but I expect the Boston finalists to take one game. 2-1 iG.
Team Liquid (6) vs. Newbee (11)
Both teams finished the Group Stage with 2-2 series records, so the seeding alone can be deceptive. Team Liquid has taken a game from each team they’ve played, losing two Game 3’s (one to Thunderbirds, another to Digital Chaos). The two wins came from Team Faceless and SG e-sports. Now, teams don’t select their competition, but Team Liquid’s Group Stage wins are not impressive.
Newbee’s victories over mousesports and Team Random carry more weight than Faceless and SGe. Digital Chaos got the best of both teams, which only points to how even this matchup is. The prediction goes against the grain of seeding: Newbee will gain an edge over Team Liquid in a Game 3; Newbee advances by two games to one (2-1).
Digital Chaos (7) vs. Vici Gaming J (10)
Another clash of 2-2 series records, both teams look strong yet defeatable. Digital Chaos and Vici Gaming J each met Secret in the Group Stage, and ended up swept as Secret dropped 0 out of 6 Group Stage games.
Sweeping Newbee in Round 1 was impressive, and Digital Chaos will advance to the Quarterfinals with a 2-0 sweep of Vici Gaming J.
Virtus.pro (2) vs. Invictus Gaming Vitality (15)
This matchup has the greatest disparity of Day 1 of the Main Event, and this time the seeding says it all. iG Vitality was impressive at DAC 2017, making a respectable run before reaching Newbee. However, Kiev has been a different story for the team. Closing out games is now difficult for iG.V.
Virtus.pro is streaking at the moment, and I’m looking forward to a deep run for VP’s two Ukrainians. This prediction is simple. Virtus.pro should advance with a 2-0 sweep over Invictus Gaming Vitality.
